About 1979, TN 43 was placed on a new bypass around the west of Martin. The route through Martin using Elm St/University St and Lindell St became TN 43 Spur (now US 45E Bus and US 45E)
Between 1990-92, TN 43 was removed from Main St through Medina.
In 1992, TN 43 was removed from Three Way Lane at the US 45E-W split in Three Way and put on the new interchange alignments in the area, changing the location of the south endpoint.
About 1994, TN 43 was removed from Vick Rd south of Bradford and Milan Hwy/Greenfield Hwy through Bradford.
About 1995, TN 43 was removed from Highway Ave through Sharon.
In 2016 or 2017, TN 43 was removed from the western Martin bypass south of TN 22 and instead replaced TN 216 heading around the eastern bypass of Martin which had been around since the mid-1990s. TN 43 then followed TN 22 past where US 45E leaves the bypass to the former western bypass to head north back to US 45E. The southwest part of the original bypass remains part of TN 216.
