I-36  requested by NCDOT
Fleetingly: In April 2016, I-36 was officially requested by NCDOT to AASHTO for designation for the future interstate corridor running along US 70 from I-40 in Garner southeast to Morehead City. This corridor was placed into the interstate system via the December 2015 FAST act that amended the ISTEA Act of 1991.
At the time of the request there have not been any Future 36 shields erected, although blank future interstate shields were installed on the new US 70 bypass of Goldsboro.
When the April 2016 AASHTO meeting happened, AASHTO rejected the number 36 and the two parties agreed on I-42 instead.
