History: NC 127 appeared in 1940 as a renumbering of NC 96, running essentially the way it does now.

In June 1966 (NCDOT), NC 127 was removed from Center St and 5th Ave in central Hickory and instead put onto 2nd St Drive NE.
In May 2002 (NCDOT), NC 127 was removed from S. Center St from west of the US 321 freeway to just north of US 70 and instead put on Brookford Blvd.

Comment: NC 127 is blown off by I-40, although before US 321 was put on its current freeway, Exit 123 was signed as only TO NC 127.
