History: NC 222 appeared in 1934 running from US 301/NC 22 Kenly east to NC 58 near Lindell.
In 1938, NC 222 was rerouted at Eureka to instead go to NC 58 (now SR 1862 Commercial Ave) at Stantonsburg, leaving behind Greene County entirely. The old route became Wilson SR 1520 (now 1058)/SR 1527 and Greene SR 1225.
In 1941, NC 222 was extended east as new primary routing to NC 43 Falkland.

In 1948, NC 222 was extended west as new routing to at least NC 42 (map is vague). The 1949 Johnston County Map shows NC 222 extended to NC 231.
Between 1963-68, NC 222 was rerouted through Stantonsburg. Initially it used Main St to Commercial (was NC 58), then south to Saratoga east out of town. Since then, NC 222 has followed Main to current NC 58 then south to Saratoga.

Comment: NC 222 is blown off by I-95 but is easily accessed via Exit 107, US 301.
NC 222 has a numerically pleasing duplex with NC 111.
It appears NC 222 is a daughter of the original NC 22. I do have a 1934 map that shows both...
