NC 264: Appeared in 1941 as a renumbering of original NC 91. It ran from US 15-501/NC 55 (Roxboro at Geer Sts) Durham east through Wake Forest, then bent southeast to end at US 64-264 (Gannon at Shepard School Rd) Zebulon.
In 1952, NC 264 was renumbered as NC 98 from Durham to east of Wake Forest and NC 96 on the piece that scooted down to Zebulon. Note that NC 264 used NC 98 Business, "Old NC 98" and Old Keith Rd in the Wake Forest area.
NC 264 was a violation of the modern numbering rules in that it had the same number as an existing US Route in North Carolina. Perhaps it was envisioned to extend US 264 over this to Durham but it was eventually sent west to Raleigh instead.
