The Road: Begins at NC 150 Cherryville and ends at the South Carolina line at Lake Wylie, all within Gaston County. The route continues as SC 279 to nearby SC 274.
Towns and Attractions: Gaston Co: Cherryville, Dallas, Gastonia
History: NC 279 was born in 1979 as a renumbering of NC 277. It originally ran from Cherryville to NC 275 Dallas. It is unclear whether NC 279 began at NC 274 or if NC 277 was rerouted to run like NC 279 does now first.
In 1981 or 1982, NC 279 was extended east on NC 275 through Dallas, then southeast as an upgrade to SRs 2264 and 2302. Between Dallas and Gastonia had once been part of NC 277 decades earlier.
