N.C. 342  dead
Formerly:
NC 342: An original state highway. Initially ran from its parent NC 34 (current US 17 Bus) Elizabeth City and ran southwest to Woodville, Winfall, and Hertford before ending at NC 32 in Edenton.
In 1925, NC 342 was extended west to NC 30 (current US 13 Business) Windsor. A bridge over the Chowan River was opened in 1926 as part of this extension.
In 1927, US 17 was assigned to the entirety of NC 342, and thus in 1934 the NC 342 designation was removed.

1924 Official
NC 342 (1921-24)
1925 Official
NC 342 (1925-34)

Today, NC 342 is US 17 and its Business Routes, except in the Woodville area, where it used Old Hertford Hwy, SR's 1143, 1371, 1330 and 1197 (no bridge over Little River). Additionally, NC 342 used NC 37 and Main St. Extension through Winfall. It appears the US 17 widening east of Windsor may leave behind another section of old NC 342.
