The Road: Begins at US 17 South Mills and ends at the village of Old Trap, all within Camden County.
Towns and Attractions: Camden Co: South Mills, Camden
History: NC 343 was born by 1930 as new primary routing. It began at its parent NC 34 in Camden, and proceeded south to Shiloh before ending at Old Trap.
In 1932, NC 343 was extended as new routing to US 17 South Mills ending at the intersection of Main and Mullen at the canal bridge.

Between 1945-49, NC 343 was rerouted at South Mills to end at US 17 north of the village, at the north end of Mullen St.
In April 1966 (NCDOT), NC 343 west was truncated to the wye intersection at the east end of Main St. NC 343 west to the north end of Mullen became part of US 17.
In Sept 1984 (NCDOT), when US 17 Business was created in South Mills, NC 343 was extended north along it to meet with the new US 17 Bypass.

Comment: NC 343 runs along the east edge of the Pasquotank River swamps.
NC 343 can be a useful back way to go from I-64 (via US 17) to US 158 heading for the Outer Banks.
