US 29A-1 was born about 1948 as new primary routing, running on today's Cabarrus Av between US 29 and US 29-A (now NC 73) Concord. In 1953, US 29A-1 was renumbered as part of US 29-A. Today it is unnumbered.
So...did this really exist as a hyphenated US Route? The only explicit evidence I have is the 1949 Cabarrus County map shown above. What other corroborating evidence might exist? AASHO records for North Carolina show that the state frequently failed to make change requests and NCDOT online archives of route changes doesn't go back that far. However, here are two scans showing US 29 and US 29A as I have described them, and they indicate Cabarrus Ave connecting them as a US route, though not explicitly labeled:
