The oldest current US 301 Business was the 3rd one created, in 1960 as a renumbering of US 301-A through Rocky Mount.
The other current US 301 Business was the 4th one created as a renumbering of NC 113 through Halifax.

The 2nd US 301 Business was created in 1960 as a reunmbering of secondary routing through Elm City which had been US 301 prior. In Nov 1970 (NCDOT), US 301 Business was decommissioned. Today it is just SR 1368 Elm City Rd.
The 5th US 301 Business was created in 1962 as a renumbering of US 301-A through Fayetteville. In 1975, US 301 Business was decommissioned to just Gillespie and Person Sts.
