In May 1962 (NCDOT), US 52 Bus was placed on one-way splits in central Mt. Airy. SB used the original two-way route on Main St and NB was put on Cherry St to Renfro St to Hines St back to Main St.
In October 1970 (NCDOT), US 52 Business was removed from Main St (now SRs 1668 and 2111) in central Mt. Airy and placed on two-way traffic on an extended Renfro St. The short Cherry St piece became US 601 NB and NC 89 EB.

There is one US 52 Business segment that is no longer active:

US 52 Business #1: Created in 1960 as a renumbering of US 52A Main St through Pilot Mtn. It used today's NC 86 from the south then headed out east on Franklin St.
US 52 Business through Pilot Mountain went away about 1964 when the US 52 freeway was opened to the west.
