US 168: In Oct 1960, Virginia and North Carolina requested that VA/NC 168 become part of a new US route corridor from US 60 Ocean View to Hatteras.
North Carolina's application floated no number but Virginia explicitly requested it as US 168.
AASHO denied the request in Nov 1960 because the route didn't have sufficient interstate travel (wait...) and also because of the then-ferry across Oregon Inlet.
Had they approved it, AASHO might have suggested a different number. The only existing routes that might have made some sense as extensions would be US 460 or US 70 from the other direction. Otherwise new numbers such as 217 or 358 would've worked.
