Adjustments: None Improvements: Paved upon inception; no multilane segments Posted: Posted prominently as if it were mainline US 17 SB Multiplexes: None Legislative names: None Other names: Latitude St Scenic Byway: no segments Comment: This is shown on the VDOT Intreractive on-line map as well as all traffic logs since 2009. US 17 ALT is one-way southbound and begins at the US 17 overpass of I-95 near Exit 126. This proves to me VDOT no longer wants to christen new Y routes as this makes zero sense to be an alternate route and really should be a P route. | Previous US 17 ALT's: |
US 17 ALT #1: Appeared in CTB minutes in 1955-59 as the designation for Frederick Blvd in Portsmouth. However, it appears the road opened as mainline US 17 in June 1959. This is shown as 17A on late 50s official maps. The 1958 Norfolk County map shows no road at all.
US 17 ALT #2: Appears in the June 1964 CTB Minutes as a proposed (by the Town of Urbanna) route from Gloucester using VA 3 to VA 33, then over to Urbanna, then along VA 227 and SR 602 back to US 17 north of Saluda. The CTB studied, then rejected the idea. This idea might've gained more traction had they proposed it follow VA 3 all the way to Fredericksburg. US 17 ALT #3: Mentioned in several CTB minutes from 1975 to 1988 as the Bowers Hill-Belleville Connector (Belleville is where I-664, US 17, and VA 164 come together), an at-grade road. In 1988 this proposed route was upgraded to an interstate proposal and eventually became I-664. |
