Creation: Eastern State Hospital received state mileage in
1932 covering 1.297 miles. However, a number was not assigned until
around 1938. Eastern State Hospital was in two quite separate locations then - the current facility northwest of Williamsburg (Dunbar area) which had a mile of road west off SR 615, and a facility in central Williamsburg - just east off Henry St south of Francis St (the original hospial location is now the Rockefeller Museum) with 0.284 miles over two driveways which connected to Henry St. This is the 3rd VA 322.
Adjustments: In March 1953 (CTB), 0.58 miles of new roads in ther Dunbar area were added to VA 322 and 0.26 miles were deleted for a net gain of 0.32 miles. In July 1954 (CTB), 1.36 miles of roads were added to VA 322 in the Dunbar area. In March 1970 (CTB), 1.98 miles of roads were added to VA 322 in the Dunbar area.
In May 1970 (CTB), the two VA 322 segments off Henry St in central Williamsburg were removed from the state highway system. I don't believe either of these segments exist as roads any longer. It appears that sometime after 2001, a little over a mile of roads at Eastern State Hospital were removed from VA 322. Posting: Fully posted at both SR 615 intersections. A posting near SR 612 is now gone. No internal postings back to at least 2007. Comment: Appears on official issues back to 1961 (except oddly 1975), but is shown back to at least the 1940 VDOT County Atlas. VA 322 appears in Rand McNally insets of Williamsburg. Eastern State Hospital has existed in some form or other since 1773, the oldest facility dedicated to mental health treatment. |
