From: (Nottoway County)
To: (Nottoway County)
Total Length: 2.11 miles

Creation: The Piedmont Sanatorium received 1.27 miles of state mileage in 1932 but did not receive a number until around 1938. VA 323 is not on official state maps. Serves the State Hospital east of Burkeville. This is the 3rd VA 323.
Adjustments: In Oct 1938 (CTB), 0.03 miles of VA 323 were added to connect to US 460.
Posting: Shields exist at both US 360 & US 460. A third entrance, west off US 460 has a rectangle.
Comment: VA 323 is a 2-lane divided route at its northern end.
The Piedmont Sanatorium was a rest home for African American TB sufferers until 1965. The facility reopened as the Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in 1967.
For some reason VA 323 did not appear on county maps until 1995 and is not shown on the 2004 county map. Never shown on state officials.

VA 323 #1: Appeared in 1923 as a renumbering of VA 20 CONN and was in 1918 part of a convoluted VA 20. Ran from VA 32 (curr US 15) Keysville to VA 10 (curr US 460 Bus) Blackstone via Lunenburg and Kenbridge. VA 323 was renumbered as four routes in 1929: VA 47 from Keysville to Lunenburg, part of VA 44 from Lunenburg to Victoria, VA 401 from Victoria to Kenbridge, and VA 48 from Kenbridge to Blackstone. Today all of these are part of VA 40 except: SR 775 Neblett Field Rd; Old Court St in Victoria; SR 736 west of Kenbridge.

VA 323 #2: Created June 1932 (CTB Minutes) as an unidentified new primary route, upgrading part of CR 9. The 1932 VDOT County Atlas shows VA 323 to run from VA 18 (current US 501) Gladys west to Long Island.
In July 1933 this was renumbered as part of VA 126. Today it is SR 761.

VA 323 TEMP: Appears in the 1925 Annual Report of the State Highway Commission referring to expenditures on this route from Ontario to Lunenburg CH. This would use today's SR 622 to Rehoboth and the VA 49 corridor. I take the existence of this route to mean that the direct path taken by today's VA 40 did not exist in a usable condition at that time.
