Creation: I-77 was approved by AASHTO to come to South Carolina in 1969. The first piece to exist was from North Carolina to today's Exit 90 about 1970. The route was built as part of the US 21 freeway bypass of Charlotte.
Adjustments: In 1971, I-77 was shown as under construction from US 21/SC 5 Lesslie north to US 21 at the State Line.
In 1973, I-77 was shown as a dotted line from I-20 north to SC 34.
In 1974, I-77 was shown as dotted line from SC 34 to US 21/SC 5; also from SC 12 to I-20.
In 1975, I-77 was opened from US 21/SC 161 Rock Hill to US 21 at the state line.
In 1976, I-77 was opened from US 21/SC 5 to US 21/SC 161.
In 1979, I-77 was opened from SC 277 to US 21 Blythewood.
In 1980, I-77 was opened from US 21 Blythewood to SC 34. Dotted lines also appeared from SC 48 to SC 760 (labeled as SC 77 for some reason).
In 1981, I-77 was opened from SC 9 to US 21/SC 5.
The 1982 Official Map shows I-77 completely open from US 1 north to North Carolina. However, I know from a trip to Carowinds around this time that the section between SC 97 and SC 9 opened first before the entire road was opened.

Improvements: Everything south of today's Exit 24 (US 21 Blythewood) was 6-laned from inception. All other parts were 4-lane initially.
In 2003, I-77 was 8-laned from US 21/SC 5 to North Carolina.
Comment:
Numerous styles of overpass bridges exist on I-77, which for some reason fascinated me when I was in middle school.
I-77 received exit numbers in 1976, which were all renumbered in 1987.
