Creation: SC 161 appeared about 1929 as new primary routing, running from SC 16 (now US 321) near Filbert northwest to North Carolina. This is the 2nd SC 161.
Adjustments: In 1959, SC 161 was extended south with US 321 into York, then east replacing SC 5 to Ebenezer, then continued as an upgrade to S-46-50 to US 21.
About 1986, SC 161 was placed onto SC 5's Bypass of York, leaving behind US 321 Bus, SC 5 Bus, and SC 5-161 CONN (now also SC 5 Bus). There is a SC 161 Business posted since at least 2008 that does not follow all of SC 161's original York routing.
Improvements: Fully paved by 1932
The US 321 multiplex was 4-laned in 1965.
SC 161 was multilane from US 21 to Mt. Gallant Rd by 2005.
In 2006, SC 161 was multilaned from S-46-195 to SC 901.
In 2007 or 2008, SC 161 was multilaned from SC 901 to S-46-30.
By 2008 SC 161 was 6-laned from S-46-30 to Mt Gallant Rd.
About 2010, SC 161 was multilaned from the east end of York Bypass to S-46-195.
In 2012, SC 161 was multilaned on its york Bypass from S-46-64 to SC 49
In 2013, SC 161 was multilaned on its York Bypass from US 321 to S-46-64; SC 49 to SC 5-161 Bus.
Comment: SC 161 serves the back entrance to the Kings Mountain State and National Parks.
SC 161 provides a north bypass of Rock Hill for York traffic trying to reach I-77.
Oddly, no state official or county map shows SC 161 through or around York.
