Creation: Appeared in 1923 as an original state route, running from the Mississippi River near Tennemo southeast through Dyersburg to end at TN 1 (now Airways Blvd) Jackson.
| Adjustments: In 1925 or 1926, TN 20 was removed from Sorrell Chapel Rd southeast out of Dyersburg. In 1927 or 1928, TN 20 was extended east with TN 1 through Jackson, then replaced TN 23 east through Lexington, Parsons, Linden and hohenwald to end at TN 6 east of Summertown.
TN 23 Jackson to Summertown 1927 National Map
TN 23 renumbered as part of TN 20 (note direct routing from Jackson to Lexington via Luray) 1929 Official In 1928 or 1929, TN 20 west was rerouted at Dyersburg to head west to the Mississippi River at Heloise. The old route towards Tennemo became an extended TN 78 plus all of TN 103.
In 1929, TN 20 was rerouted west of Lexington, leaving behind today's TN 186 to Beech Bluff; Luray Rd/Spencer Creek Rd and Hubbard Town Rd to Luray; Luray Rd; Wilkins Rd; McCaney Mill Rd; Old Jackson Rd; Barnhill St and Main St to Lexington In 1930, TN 20 was removed from Cotton Grove Rd, McLeary Rd and (no longer connects to) Cave House Rd between US 70 and Claybrook Also in 1930, TN 20 was removed from a bit of US 641, 2nd St and Old Perryville Rd out of Parsons; McKenzie Rd; Sardis Ridge Rd to Perryville; Cruse Ln and (no longer connects to) Cruse Rd to abandoned ferry over Tennessee River running northeast from Perryville; on the east side of the river, the road followed the river south to pick up Cypress Creek Rd In 1932, TN 20 was removed from TN 104 then Franklin Ave out of Lexington (no longer connects to) and Roy Pruitt Rd; Shady Hill Rd then Reed Hill Rd through Rock Hill; Rock Hill Rd until it turns north; abandoned roadway along the former railroad; Field Rd (no longer connects to) and Doodlem Ln to Chesterfield; Old Darden-Chesterfield Rd to Darden; Darden Ln; it is unclear how it got to Eliot Dr which no longer connects to Hugh Carrington Ln to Beacon; TN 202 to Beacon Jct; a bit of Box Rd; Old Parsons Ln and (no longer connects to) Alma Ln; Old Lexington Hwy through Bear Creek
TN 20 straightened out north of Jackson to Linden 1934 Official In 1957, Tennessee tried to get US 70 ALT assigned to TN 20 between Jackson and Linden. Between 1958-60, TN 20 was given a more direct routing from Fowlkes to Jackson, leaving behind today's Old Hwy 20 through Tigrett and Friendship; TN 189 to Maury City; TN 88 through Alamo and Bells; Old Jackson Rd/Old Bells Rd through Midway, Gum Flat and Adair.
Between 1957-64, TN 20 was rerouted at Linden to follow TN 100 northeast a few miles, then east as new state highway to the Lewis/Perry line where it met back up with the previous alignment. The old TN 20 used: S. Mill St/Old State Hwy 13 out of Linden; Old Hohenwald Rd/Stanley Hinson Rd. This is also likely when TN 20 was removed from two Old Linden Rd segments and Kappeler Ln heading east into Hohenwald.
In 1982 (AASHO), US 412 was added to TN 20 from Dyersburg to Jackson (this had been rejected by AASHO in 1980). Between 1983-86, TN 20 was rerouted in Jackson to leave Hollywood Dr at US 45 Bypass and use that south to US 70. In Nov 1986 (AASHO), US 412 was added to TN 20 from Jackson to Hohenwald In 1987 or 1988, TN 20 west was rerouted onto the new US 412 freeway to the east of Dyersburg. The route to US 51 Fowlkes became part of TN 210 and the route from US 51 west to Heloise became part of TN 104. Also in 1987 or 1988, TN 20 was rerouted in Jackson onto North Parkway, avoiding central Jackson.
In 1991, TN 20 was removed from Bells Hwy northwest of Jackson. In 1994, TN 20 was removed from Cavalier Dr through western Alamo. Posting: TN 20 is posted as primary between Hohenwald and Summertown; not posted at all on its US 412 overlay Secret US Route Overlay: US 412 I (42.3 mi) US 412 Bus (8.8 mi) US 412 II (75.3 mi) Comment: TN 20 is a major corridor from Dyersburg to Jackson and had been initially part of a larger I-155 proposal. The road here is expressway with interchanges at major intersections. |
