Creation: US 70A appeared in 1938 as an addition to TN 76 from Brownsville to Atwood, then over TN 77 to Huntingdon. Tennessee requested this as US 70N but AASHO approved only if it were signed as 70A. Surprisingly, they agreed. This is the 2nd US 70A.

Adjustments: About 1948, US 70A was given its direct routing through Milan. Prior to this it used Highland St, College St, Main St, Williamson St and Park Ave

In 1983, US 70A was rerouted away from downtown Brownsville to replace TN 76 Byp to US 70. Washington Ave north of Main remains part of TN 54 and TN 369.

It is unclear when US 70A was rerouted around the north of Huntingdon via TN 77 and TN 364 to its current endpoint east of town. State Officials have never shown it. County maps between 1998-2007 started showing it. The old route to US 70 remains part of TN 22.

Comment: US 70A provides a viable alternative to US 70 to avoid Jackson

Previous 70A's:

US 70A #1: Appeared in 1935, when AASHO changed US 70S to US 70A as part of extending the route to run Nashville-Murfreesboro-Sparta-Crossville.

Tennessee Official maps 1935-38 showed US 70A, then reverted back to US 70S in 1939. AASHO recognized this switch in 1952.
It is highly doubtful US 70A was ever posted. Today the route is US 70S from Nashville to Sparta and US 70 from Sparta to Crossville except:
1st/Peabody/2nd out of Nashville; Old Murfreesboro Rd in Una; the lengthy Old Nashville Hwy to La Vergne. US 70A used part of today's Goodman Cir; W. College St into Murfreesboro; College/Spring/Main through Murfreesboro; Old Woodbury Pike through Kitrell; Old Woodbury Pike through Readyville; Murfressboro Rd through Woodbury; several abandoned alignments, plus Elkins Cir and Lincoln Ln in eastern Cannon County; McMinnville Hwy and Old Nashville Hwy through Centertown; Old Nashville Hwy/(no longer connects to) Airport Rd; Post Rd/Old Post Rd/Commodore Dr and South Cir west of McMinnville; TN 380 through McMinnville; Old Rock Island Rd between McMinnville and Campaign; C O Hines Rd near Campaign; Rock Island Rd through Rock Island; McMinnville Hwy through Welling and Doyle; TN 1 into Sparta; Gaines St/Country Club Rd east out of Sparta, plus the Old US 70 loop at the east end of that; Old Hwy Rd in De Rossett; abandoned loop in far eastern White County; Old State Hwy 1 in western Cumberland County; Old State Rd and Arthur Seagraves Rd/Glade Creek Rd at Smith Chapel; Main St through Pleasant Hill; Old Highway 70 from Claysville through Pomona to nearly Crossville; Sparta Dr in Crossville

US 70A #3: In November 1957, AASHO deferred a decision on Tennessee's request for an alternate route to US 70 between Jackson and Nashville, using TN 20 and TN 100.
AASHO was skeptical, as they said there was an over abundance of US Routes in the area. However, the deferral was to see where exactly the new interstate would be running.
