Creation: Appeared in 1923 as an original state highway, running from Mississippi north through Selmer, Henderson, Jackson, Trenton, Sharon and Martin before entering Kentucky at South Fulton.
Adjustments: In late 1926, US 45 was added to TN 5 from the Mississippi line through Jackson to Threeway; also from Sharon to South Fulton.
About 1927, TN 5 was removed from Bethel Purdy Rd; Otis Plunk Rd to McNairy; a bit of McNairy Rd; Although Smith Rd; Clayton Rd to just past Hogwallow Cr and abandoned routing northwest back to today's US 45 just south of TN 199 exists, TN 5 may have initially used Litt Wilson Rd to Finger; Main St; Droke Rd/Old Finger Rd to just outside Henderson.
In 1927 or 1928, TN 5 was rerouted at Trenton to replace TN 41 to end at US 51 (1st at Main) Union City. The old route to Sharon became part of TN 54 (used Neal Kinsey Rd/Old Trenton-Dresden Rd/Lynn Point Rd/Hillsboro St between Greenfield and Bradford) and Sharon to South Fulton KY became TN 43 (used Milan Hwy/Greenfield Hwy through Bradford; TN 372 through Martin)
About 1929, TN 5 was removed from Circle Hill Dr leaving Selmer. At Fire Tower Rd, the route used to continue due north to the Hopkins/Jackson intersection and TN 5 used Jackson St to Bethel Springs.
In mid-1929, US 45W was added to TN 5 from Threeway to Union City.
Also about 1929, TN 5 was removed from Markham Ln/abandoned routing/Old Dyer-Trenton Rd and Poplar St/Old Dyer-Rutherford Rd/Gravette Crosing E. It is unclear how TN 5 went between those roads
About 1930, TN 5 was given a direct alignment from Selmer south to the Mississippi line. the original routing was Sticine Rd from the state line area to Caffey; New Hope Rd; Mayflower Rd/Tom Baker Rd/Roy Seay Rd through Gravel Hill; Freddie Davis Rd; Old No 5 S; Ramer-Selmer Rd; Falcon Rd into Selmer.
Also about 1930, TN 5 was removed from a bit of Wilson School Rd near the Madison/Chester Line; abandoned routing northwest; Old Henderson Rd to Pinson; a bit of Bear Creek Rd; Simmons Rd plus abandoned routings on both ends; more abandoned routing (some taken over by the modern US 45 SB alignment); both Old Pinson Rds; Harts Bridge Rd
About 1934, TN 5 was removed from Main St, White Ave (this is now TN 365), then Garland Rd leaving Henderson, plus Old Jackson Rd and moved to Church Ave north out of Henderson.
In 1935 or 1936, TN 5 was extended north as new state highway to Kentucky above Woodland Mills.
About 1958, TN 5 was removed from Royal St and Main St in central Jackson and placed on the newly constructed Highland Ave extension south.

About 1963, TN 5 was given its bypass around the east of Trenton, leaving behind TN 5 Bus (now TN 367).
About 1980, TN 5 was removed from Church Ave through Henderson.
About 1990, TN 5 was placed on the existing US 64 bypass of Selmer, then onto the extended new bypass around Bethel Springs. The old route became US 64 Bus through central Selmer; Peach St leaving Selmer; Main St through Bethel Springs.

In 1992, TN 5 was removed from Three Way Ln in Three Way
About 1997, TN 5 was removed from what is now the frontage road at the north end of the US 45 Byp near Three Way.
About 1998, TN 5 was removed from Old US 45 at the Mississippi State Line.
About 2000, TN 5 was given its bypasses around the west of Dyer and Rutherford, leaving behind Trenton Hwy, Main St in Dyer (some of this is still TN 185), and Trenton St in Rutherford.
