Creation: Appeared in 1927 or 1928 as new state highway, running from TN 15 Somerville to the Mississippi River at Richardsons. This is the 2nd TN 59.
Adjustments: Around 1930, TN 59 was straightened out northwest of Mason. The old route used about 1/4 mile of St Paul Rd, then abandoned routing parallel to TN 59 to just short of Pickens Rd; another segment had used Embry Anderson Rd
In 1931 or 1932, TN 59 was rerouted at Mason to follow US 70 southwest to Braden, then southeast as new routing nearly all the way to Somerville. The old route is Main St in Mason; Thorpe Dr to nearly Belmont; Belmont Rd, then a lengthy Old Fifty Nine Dr; today's TN 222.
In 1951 was replaced by and truncated to a rerouted TN 76 north of Somerville. TN 59 was also removed from Armory Rd at this time.

By 1970, TN 59 was on one-way splits in Covington west of the courthouse square: EB used College St/Pleasant Ave and WB used the original routing on Liberty Ave
In 1985, TN 59 was placed on its bypass of Covington using US 51 around the west and new construction south of town. The old route is an extended TN 54 and S. Main St (some of which is part of TN 384).
