Creation: An original route that started out running from TN 31 (now Liberty Rd) Wartburg to TN 61 (now Kingston Ave) Oliver Springs
| Adjustments: About 1931, TN 62 west was extended over US 27 to US 27's new routing (Main St) in Wartburg. By 1938, TN 62 east was truncated to the rerouted TN 61 which was moved from Kingston Ave to W. Tri-County Blvd. Between 1939-46, TN 62 was removed from the Old Hwy 62 loop east of Wartburg; Basler Rd east of Liberty; abandoned routing plus Beech Fork Rd in Union; Portwood Store Rd near Stephens About 1951, TN 62 was removed from Guy Jones Rd, Jimmy Justice Rd and Patterson Rd near Coalfield; A bit of Back Valley Rd, abandoned routing and Big Mountain Church Rd west of Oliver Springs Between 1957-60, TN 62 was extended east with TN 61 near Oak Ridge, then continued east to end at US 11-70-441 Knoxville. The portion east of Pleasant Ridge Rd had once been US 25W years earlier. About 1965, TN 62 was removed from Hannah Dr and Midway Dr southeast of Oliver Springs; Old Knoxville Hwy northwest of Oak Ridge Between 1963-71, TN 62 west was extended north with US 27, then west as new routing to Monterrey.
In 1977, TN 62 was removed from Main St/Old Hwy 27 in Wartburg. In 1979, TN 62 was rebuilt at the TN 170 and Clinch River area, leaving behind a bit of Bethel Valley Rd, the ramp from TN 170 to TN 62 WB, and abandoned crossing of Clinch River. By 1985, TN 62 was given its bypass of Oliver Springs, leaving behind TN 330 and Knox Ave. Also in 1985, TN 62 was straightened out across White Creek east of High Point, leaving behind an abandoned horseshoe north of the current route. In 2003, TN 62 was given its bypass of Lancing, leaving behind a disconnected Old Nashville Hwy About 2020, TN 62 was removed from Old Western Ave in West Knoxville Posting: Posted as primary routing everywhere except east of I-75/640 where it is posted as a secondary route. The overlays with US 27 and TN 61 are fully posted Secret US Route Overlay: None Comment: TN 62 connects Knoxville to Oak Ridge, Oliver Springs and Wartburg. |
