Creation: Appeared in 1927 or 1928 running from US 70 Sparta to TN 42 (current US 70N) Monterey.
| Adjustments: The 1932 route log (and not 1930 or 1934) shows TN 84 extended northwest to end at the new TN 42 Rickman, replacing the old TN 42 routing. This is implied on the 1930 Official. Officials from 1932 onward show no state highway from Monterey to Hickman and TN 84 was truncated back to Monterey.
In 1933 or 1934 (per route log), TN 84 north was truncated to US 70 (now US 70N) west of Monterey. Mileage logs on Official maps don't show this until 1938. Also in 1933 or 1934, TN 84 south was truncated to TN 42 north of Sparta, leaving behind TN 42 (now TN 289). The 1939 White County map shows it, but Official maps don't show it until after 1940 that TN 84 south was rerouted to enter Sparta directly as it does now. The old road to TN 42 is Turntable Rd and Ray Broyles Rd. In 1953 or 1954, TN 84 was extended east with US 70N to Monterey, then north to end at TN 42 (now Rickman Rd) just south of Livingston. In 1989, TN 84 was extended north over TN 42 on Rickman Rd to end at the new TN 42 (now TN 111) alignment. In 2013 or 2014, TN 84 was removed from Rickman Rd and put on new construction past TN 111 to end at TN 85 west of Livingston.
