Creation: Appeared in 1927 or 1928 running from US 51 (now TN 210) Halls west to the Mississippi River at Hales Point.
| Adjustments: In 1931 or 1932, TN 88 was extended south with US 51 to Gates, then east to end at TN 20 (now TN 189) Maury City.
If TN 88 ever used Viar and Viar Spur Rd west of Halls it stopped doing so by 1938. Between 1957-60, TN 88 was extended east replacing TN 20 to end at US 70A-79 Bells. In 1961 or 1962, TN 88 was placed on the bypass around Maury City, replacing TN 88 Bypass. The original route used Broadway and College Sts to reach former TN 20 (now TN 189). Between 1974-81, TN 88 was extended east to TN 20 (now US 412). This road had been TN 20 in years past.
Between 1982-86, TN 88 west was rerouted at Hales Point, no longer heading to the river via Hales Point Grainery Rd but to instead head south down Hales Point-Barr Rd to end at Dee Webb Rd.
