Creation: Appeared in 1930 running from US 31E and TN 25 (Water at Main) Gallatin to US 31W near Mitchellville.
Adjustments: In 1932 (bridge date), TN 109 was removed from Old Douglas Rd north of Gallatin; abandoned alignments; Douglas Loop; South Hiller Ln and "Old State Route 109" a little south of South Tunnel. It is my belief that TN 109 was also removed from South Tunnel Rd/Old Gallatin Rd up to Fountainhead Rd (earliest Sumner County map I have seen, 1937, shows TN 109 moved).
In 1941 (bridge dates), TN 109 was removed from Butler Rd to Fountain Head; Fountain Head Rd east; Old Gallatin Rd north to Portland; Russell St through Portland; Victor Riter Pkwy northwest of Portland; TGT Rd to US 31W. This moved TN 109's north endpoint north 0.4 miles closer to the Kentucky State Line.

Between 1940-50, TN 109 was removed from Old hwy 109 North and McCloud Lane loops near Highland Academy.
In 1955, TN 109 was extended south to US 70N (now US 70) Martha.
In 1965 (bridge date), TN 109 was extended south as new construction to I-40.
In 1995 or 1996, TN 109 was rerouted in Gallatin to follow US 31E out to Albert Gallatin Ave then west back to Water Ave. The old route used Water Ave all the way from downtown.
Between 1998-2000, TN 109 was placed on the bypass around the west of Gallatin, replacing TN 109 Bypass from the south end to TN 25 and newly constructed highway north back to TN 109. The old route remains part of TN 174 plus "Old State Route 109."
In 2002 or 2003, TN 109 was extended south to TN 265-840 as newly constructed 4-lane highway.

In 2009 or 2010, TN 109 was placed on new 4-lane alignment north of the Gallatin Bypass to the South Tunnel area, leaving behind Scotty Parker Rd
In 2011 or 2012, TN 109 was placed on new 4-lane alignment from the South Tunnel area to just short of TN 76, leaving behind Academy Rd
In late 2019, TN 109 north was rerouted near Mitchellville onto newly constructed 4-lane routing to end at I-65, leaving behind Magnolia Springs Rd.
About 2004, TN 111 between US 127 and US 27 was converted into a full freeway.
Posting: posted as primary routing throughout.
Secret US Route Overlay: None
Comment: TN 109 is being widened so that it will be fully multilane throughout.
With its new connection to I-65, TN 109 can approximate the function of the cancelled northeast quadrant of the Nashville Beltway.
