Creation: Appeared about 1969 as new freeway running from TN 354 near Johnson City to TN 93 Kingsport. This is the 2nd TN 137.
| Adjustments: About 1975, TN 137 was extended south as new freeway to US 321 (now TN 91) Johnson City. By 1978, Tn 137 was extended south to US 19W-23 south of Johnson City About 1980, TN 137 south was truncated to US 11E-19W-23 north of Johnson City, replaced by US 19W-23 and TN 36. About 1981, TN 137 was extended north to US 11W as more new freeway. This is likely when US 23 was moved onto the entirety of TN 137.
About 1983, TN 137 was extended north as more new freeway to US 23-TN 36 Morrison City, and US 23 was added to it. In December 1985, TN 137 was replaced by I-181 everywhere south of US 11W Kingsport. TN 137 #1: Appeared in 1949 or 1950 as new routing, running from TN 53 (jct of Cedar Hill Rd and Old hwy 53) east of Celina northeast to the Kentucky line.
By 1951, TN 137 was renumbered as part of TN 53. TN 53 has been rebuilt out of Celinas. TN 137 used today's East Old Hwy 53; Lake View Dr; abandoned routing across modern TN 53; Schell Ln; West Old Hwy 53; Davistown Loop; Stephens Cir; Fire Hall Rd through Thompsons Store and to the Kentucky Line.
