TN 840: The following information comes from a very nice booklet released by TDOT in November 2012 commemorating the completion of TN 840. Appeared in 1995 when the first segment of the Southern half of the Nashville Beltway opened from I-40 near Lebanon south to Stewarts Ferry Pike. A Nashville Beltway was first proposed in the mid 1970s and was referred to by TDOT as I-840 as early as 1986, but when actual freeway opened it was signed as TN 840.
In 1996, TN 840 was extended south to I-24 north of Murfreesboro. In 2000, TN 840 was extended from I-24 to US 31A-41A.
In 2001, TN 840 was extended west to US 431 Franklin. In 2002, a second segment was opened from I-40 near Dickson southeast to TN 100. In 2003, the northern loop around Nashville was put on indefinite hold. An EIS was completed on the northern loop in 1995. In 2005, TN 840 was extended from US 431 west to US 31.
In 2010, the western piece was extended east to TN 46. In November 2012, the two segments were connected, completing the souther loop of Nashville.
In 2015, TN 840 was redesignated as I-840.
TN 840 becomes I-840 2017 Official The exit list for former TN 840 is below. The TN 452 exit is the only one not part of the original lineup, having been constructed in the 2002-03 timeframe.
