Creation: US 31E was requested by Tennessee in July 1929 at the request of Kentucky and approved shortly after. It initially began near Edenwold (Rivergate Pkwy and Gallatin Pike) and headed east through Gallatin and Westmoreland and on into Kentucky. This was a replacement for US 31 as well as an addition to TN 6.
Adjustments: In 1932, US 31W was placed on new routing out of Nashville. US 31E was extended south, changing its endpoint to 1st and Main in Nashville.
About 1949, US 31E was removed from Rockland Rd in Hendersonville
Between 1952-56, US 31E's routing moved from Main St to Woodland/Deadrick Sts, still ending at Main St
Between 1957-64, US 31W was moved off 1st St to instead use Dickerson Pike/Spring St to end at US 31E Main St.
About 1964, US 31E was removed from TN 25/E Main St in Gallatin
About 1966, US 31E was rebuilt from Gallatin to the Kentucky line. Surviving pieces: Sideview Rd in Shiloh; 3 short Old Hwy 31E loops up through Bethpage; the lengthy Old US Hwy 31E through Westmoreland and Sugar Grove. The northern bit of this is now part of TN 174.

In 1987, US 31E was moved onto the new TN 386 freeway that bypassed Hendersonville. The old route through town became US 31E Business.
In 1990, TN 386 was uilt west to I-65 and for some reason US 31E was removed from the bypass around Hendersonville and sent back through town. The short piece of freeway between US 31E and TN 386 is now TN 6 CONN.

Comment: With US 31W so close to I-65, US 31E could go back to being just US 31.
