Creation: Appeared in 1930, running from the North Carolina line at Trade through Mountain City to end at US 11-11W-19-411 (State St at Piedmont) Bristol.
Adjustments: In 1932, US 321 was renumbered as US 421. Today the routing is still US 421 except (this is listed from NW to SE): State St to Pennsylvania Ave; Hazelwood St, Carolina Ave and Holston Valley Pike in eastern Bristol; TN 435; Arnold Way/Pemberton Rd plus Old Shady Rd/abandoned alignment/Baines Dr in Holston Valley; TN 44, Knob Park Rd, underwater routing southeast, Jacob Park Rd where it leaves an arm of the lake, a little Denton Valley Rd, and abandoned routing s-se back to current US 421 at Jacks Corner; TN 418 through Mountain City; Crossroads Dr ; Rhea Rd (no longer connects to)/Old Prison Camp Rd; Dowell Loop; P Snyder Rd; Drakes Creek Loop; Poplar Ridge Rd Despite it's short lived existence, US 321 WAS posted.
In June 1951, AASHO rejected a proposed extension of US 321 from Boone NC to Mountain City TN with US 421, then north via TN 91 to Damascus on its way to Lexington KY. In 1960, US 321 was approved for re-extension into Tennessee, running from the North Carolina line near Buntontown west via Hampton and Elizabethton to end at US 19W-23 (now Roan St) Johnson City. US 321 was added to all of TN 159 from NC to TN 67; TN 67 west to Elizabethton; TN 91 to Johnson City.
US 321 original route in Tennessee 1964 Official In 1966, US 321 was removed from 1st St in Hampton. In 1973, US 321 was removed from Sycamore/Johnson/State Line/S. Pine St Elizabethton to the south and instead routed on the new US 19E routing east of town to Broad St west In fall 1981, US 321 was extended west with TN 91 to US 11E, then followed US 11E to Greeneville, then followed US 411 to Newport, then TN 32 to I-40, then TN 73 west through Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge to Maryville, then followed the newly constructed TN 95 west through Lenoir City to I-40. Tennessee tried to get the Newport to Lenoir City route as an extension of US 74 in both 1978 and spring 1981.
By 1984, US 321 was removed from Old US 321 just east of TN 67/159 jct. About 1984, US 321 was removed from White Wing Rd and straightened out east of I-40 near Lenoir City. In 1985, US 321 was rerouted onto the new Lamar Alexander Pkwy in Maryville. S. Washington St became TN 35 Spur (now TN 447) and Broadway Ave remained part of US 411. In 1991, US 321 was moved onto the new TN 67 expressway route from Elizabethton to Johnson City, then followed TN 67 past I-181 (now I-26) then picked up the new TN 381 route back to US 11E. The old route through Johnson City remains TN 91 and US 11E.
In 1999, US 321 was removed from I-40 in the Newport area to instead follow TN 32 south to TN 73.
In 2007, US 321 was removed from Sable Rd (no longer connects to)/Carter Valley Rd; Old Parrottsville Hwy east of Cloud Way well east of Parrottsville. No matter what you are heading down US 321 SB leaving that intersection. US 321 is a gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park from both directions with accesses at Gatlinburg and Townsend. |
