Creation: I-81's origins in West Virginia go back to at least the 1943 Interregional Highway System Proposal. It was not on the 1939 proposed system within West Virginia (instead followed today's i-66 to Washington DC).
Adjustments: By 1963, I-81 was opened from WV 9 north to US 11.
In 1966, I-81 was completed in West Virginia

Between 2004-06, I-81 was 6-laned from WV 45 to CR 15 and 8 laned from CR 15 to CR 13 around Martinsburg.
In 2014, I-81 was 6-laned from 2 miles north of WV 9 to US 11 Falling Waters
In 2021, I-81 was 6-laned from US 11 Falling Waters into Maryland
In 2022, I-81 was 6-laned from WV 51 Inwood to WV 45 Martinsburg
Only Virginia to WV 51 remains 4-lanes
New Interchanges: EXIT 13 - CR 15 (btw 1972-74)
EXIT 14 - CR 13 (btw 1998-2003)
Comment: I-81 is very busy with heavy truck traffic throughout its West Virginia run. WVDOT does plan to finish 6-laning I-81 in the next 10-15 years.
