Creation: An original route from the 1925 plan that was not routed through West Virginia (Elizabeth NJ to Cleveland). In April 1926, US 22 was rerouted to Cambridge OH and thus passed through West Virginia, replacing WV 25 from Pennsylvania to Weirton, then following WV 2 south to near Follansbee where US 22 left to cross the Ohio River.
|
Adjustments: In 1928, a new Ohio River bridge was constructed just south of Weirton and US 22 was placed on it and today's CR 507 Freedom Way to Hollidays Cove. In 1936 (WVDOH), US 22 was removed from 24th St/24 th St Ext Loop; CR 15 Culler Rd and Palm Dr east of Weirton. In July 1977 (AASHTO), US 22 was placed on new freeway from Pennsylvania to today's Exit 3, then replaced CR 1 and US 22 ALT to WV 2 in Weirton. The old route became CR 22/1, WV 105, and WV 2. Maps for a while showed both the old and new routings as US 22.
In 1990, a new bridge over the Ohio River was opened and US 22 was placed on it. This left behind CR 507 Freedom Way to the old Ohio River bridge, which wasn't removed from service until 2009 and torm down in 2012. In 1993 (per March 1996 AASHTO application), US 22 was placed on additional new freeway connecting the 1977 freeway to the 1990 Ohio River Bridge. This left behind CR 1 and CR 507.
Improvements: Fully paved upon inception US 22 was multilaned on its new freeway routings as they occurred and is 100% freeway today. Comment: US 22 is left off the 1927 WV Official map for some reason. |
