Adjustments: About 1950, US 340 was routed out of central Harpers Ferry onto its present crossing into Virginia. The old route into Harpers Ferry became US 340 ALT except the river crossing into Maryland was abandoned.
In 1971, US 340 was placed on new construction east of Charlestown to near Harpers Ferry. This left behind CR 340/6 Somerset Blvd; CR 340/12 and CR 23 (now WV 230) through Halltown.
In June 1991 (AASHTO), US 340 was given its bypass of Charlestown. The old route through town became CR 340/18 Augustine Ave and an extended WV 51.
