Creation: Appeared November 21, 1928 (AASHO) as an addition to WV 6, running from US 50 near Prunytown to the Ohio State Line at Wheeling.
|
Adjustments: In 1930 (WVDOH annual report), US 250 was rerouted at Limestone as new primary routing northwest to Wheeling. The old route via Moundsville became WV 93 and WV 2 remained from Moundsville to Wheeling. In 1931 (WVDOH annual report), US 250 was removed from today's CR 250/55 Mary Lou Retton Dr and CR 56 W. Fork River Trail south of Fairmont. In 1933, US 250 was rerouted to again go via Moundsville as an addition to WV 88 (had replaced WV 93) and again WV 2. The more direct route became part of WV 88 (Bethlehem to Wheeling is now 29th St, Valley Blvd, and W. Bethlehem Pike).
also in 1933, US 250 was placed on its current routing in Hundred, leaving behind a little WV 70 (now WV 69) and Wetzel St. In September 1934 (AASHO), US 250 was extended east with US 50 to Fairmont, then replaced WV 56 south to Philippi, Elkins, and southeast to Virginia. This extension was first envisioned in 1931 AASHO correspondence but this had to wait until the route west of Monterey VA was placed into Virginia's state highway system.
It appears that between 1934-37, US 250 was rerouted in South Wheeling from Chapline/Water and 39th to instead use Chapline/33rd to reach Jacob. By 1938, US 250 was put on a one way pair in Wheeling. SB used the original route - Main St. NB used 16th/Market/7th. A second one way pair in South Wheeling used Jacob/33rd NB and Eoff/39th SB. About 1943, US 250 was rerouted in Moundsville to head south on Jefferson to 7th west to the new WV 2 alignment, then orth towards Wheeling. The old route north on Jefferson became US 250 ALT. Between 1943-46, US 250 was rerouted between Mannington and Fairmont, mostly as new construction but also replaced CR 250/13. The old route became CR 91 and CR 250/32. Between 1947-49, US 250 was rerouted to avoid Grafton and instead replaced WV 68 southeast to Webster. The old route remained US 50 to Grafton, CR 40 Riverside Dr in Grafton and US 119 south of Grafton.
In 1955, US 250 was removed from the Wheeling Suspension Bridge plus Zane St south of I-70 and placed onto the current I-70 bridge. Between 1958-64, US 250 was removed from CR 250/15 in the Harding area west of Elkins; also CR 250/11 out of Belington; also CR 44 Bills Creek Rd and CR 250/9 Valley Bend Rd, the lengthy CR 23 between Belington and Philippi. In 1964 (bridge date), US 250 was removed from CR 2/7 Marshall St in McMechen and Benwood. In 1965 (bridge date), US 250 was removed from CR 250/13, CR 250/11, and CR 1 west out of Durbin. In 1967, US 250 was placed on newly constructed alignment between Beverly and Elkins, leaving behind CR 219/19 Old US 250, CR 219/12 SH Wood Rd, CR 219/11 Country Club Rd from Hazelwood to Midland, CR 25 and CR 5/6 Glenmore Loop Rd, CRs 219/30, 219/32 and CR 219/33. Around 1970, US 250 went back to using Jefferson Ave north to WV 2 in Moundsville. Jefferson south to 7th became WV 88 (now CR 250/88).
In 1974 or 1975, mainline US 250/WV 2 was placed on upgraded freeway routing which had been US 250 ALT Wetzel St in South Wheeling, then used 33rd St to get back over to where US 250 continued into central Wheeling. The old route through S. Wheeling is Jacob St.
In September 1982 (AASHTO), US 250 was placed on more freeway from 33rd northeast to I-70 which US 250 followed through Wheeling Tunnel back over to US 40 Zane St. In April 1994 (AASHTO), US 250 was removed from CR 250/15, CR 151/3, CR 151, and CR 151/4 west of Elkins and placed on the newly constructed Corridor H expressway. In January 2002 (AASHTO), US 250 was rerouted in Elkins to head northwest with US 219 to newly constructed Corridor H, then westward back to the existing route. The old route west out of Elkins remained part of WV 92. Improvements: Fully paved upon inception; I believe the 1935 extension to Virginia was fully paved at that time. By 1976, US 250 was multilaned from McMechen to below Wheeling. In 1981, US 250 was multilaned through Wheeling By 1986, US 250 was multilaned from Moundsville to McMechen. About 1994, US 250 was multilaned on its Corridor H routing. Between 2000-01, US 250 was multilaned from Beverly to Elkins US 250 has a multilane segment in the I-79 area that goes back to at least 1997. Comment: There is a posted US 250 TRUCK in Philippi to avoid a covered bridge just south of US 119. US 250 from Moundsville to Mannington is one of the windiest main roads in West Virginia, despite little change in elevation. |
