WV 48: Appeared in 1922 as new primary highway, running from WV 49 (now WV 115) Kearneysville to Maryland at Shepherdstown.
In 1937, the Potomac river bridge was destroyed by a flood. The replacement bridge (opened in 1939) is in the location of the current bridge, and at that time, WV 48 was rerouted off of East German St (now WV 230) and North Princess St and instead used NOrth Duke St to the bridge. In 1977, WV 48 was replaced by WV 480 because of the appearance of the first US 48.
