Creation: Appeared in 1941 as a renumbering of WV 23 from US 220 Moorefield to Wardensville, then as upgrade to CR east to the Virginia line. This is the 4th WV 55.
|
Adjustments: By 1946, WV 55 was removed from CR 55/1 Old Wardensville Pike east of Wardensville and CR 55/2 at Baker. About 1983, WV 55 was extended south with US 220 to Petersburg, south with WV 28 to Seneca Rocks, west with US 33 to Elkins, south with US 219 to Marlinton, west with WV 39 to WV 150, then replaced WV 150 through Richwood and Craigsville to end at US 19 Muddlety.
In 2003, WV 55 was moved onto the new Corridor H expressway from Moorefield to Baker, leaving behind a lengthy CR 55/20 and a bit of WV 259. In 2006, WV 55 was moved onto the new Corridor H expressway from Baker to Wardensville, leaving behind an extended WV 29 and more lengthy CR 55/20. Improvements: Upon designation, WV 55 was paved only the first few miles out of Moorefield and from Needmore to Baker. WV 55 became fully paved by 1946. WV 55's first multilane segment was upon its 1983 addition to US 33 from Elkins to near Alpena. Between 2000-01, WV 55 was multilaned from Beverly to Elkins In 2003, WV 55 was multilaned from Moorefield to Baker. In 2006, WV 55 was multilaned from Baker to just short of Wardensville. Comment: WV 55 is 225 miles long and only about 12 miles of it is not overlayed with other routes, now that US 48 has been added to it from Moorefield to Virginia. One wonders if that would get WV 55 seriously truncated soon. WV 55 I believe is the longest route in West Virginia that does not cross a West Virginia interstate. It appears odd that WV 55 doesn't use WV 150's routing. However, this may be because WV 150 is not maintained in the winter and disallows commercial traffic. | Previous WV 55's:

WV 55 #1: Appeared 1922 as new primary routing running from WV 2 New Martinsville east to WV 6 (now US 250) near Hundred.
Between 1926-28, WV 55 was renumbered as part of WV 7. Today it is still WV 23 except in the WV 7-20 junction vicinity the old WV 55 routing used a bit of WV 20, abandoned routing, and CR 7/23 Old Rte 7.
WV 55 #2: Appeared 1928 (WVDOH Annual Report) as new primary routing from WV 7 near New Martinsville southeast to US 19 below Shinnston. Between 1929-31, WV 55 was renumbered as WV 20. I have yet to see a map show this. WV 55 #3: Appeared 1933 as new primary routing running from WV 18 Tyler east to US 50 (now CR 50/28 Main St) Salem. In 1941, WV 55 was renumbered as WV 23.
