Creation: Appeared between 1929-31 as a renumbering of WV 22 running from WV 15 Webster Springs to US 50 (Pike at Main) Clarksburg, then after following US 19 north to nearly Shinston, headed northwest replacing WV 55 to end at WV 2 New Martinsville. This is the 2nd WV 20. | WV 20 was on one-way splits in Clarksburg at the time of its creation, with NB using Oak and Pike and SB using the original routing along Main St.
Adjustments: In 1936 or 1937, WV 20 was removed from CR 20/18 and CR 20/19 plus some abandoned routing in the Hodam area of Webster County. In 1938, WVDOH studied requesting replacing all of WV 20 with an unspecified US route number. It is unclear if they formally requested this or not but it obviously did not happen. In 1941, WV 20 was extended south replacing some of WV 15 to Craigsville, then replacing WV 94 to Fenwick, the following WV 39 west to Nettie, then replacing WV 44 south through Hinton to end at US 219 (now WV 104) Princeton.
Between 1942-44, WV 20 was extended with US 219 into Princeton, then replaced CR 32 and CR 17 to US 52 Bluewell, then followed US 52 to Bramwell, then replaced CR 15 to the Virginia State line at Pocahontas VA.
Between 1938-46, WV 20 was removed from CR 20/27 above Kanawha Head and instead replaced CR 20/15. Between 1941-46, WV 20 was given its current routing through Athens. The original route used Vermillion to Burch to abandoned routing north. Also between 1941-46, WV 20 was removed from CR 20/4 Williams Rd in Craigsville. By 1948, WV 20 was removed from CR 20/77 Cimarron Rd in Clarksburg which no longer connects back to WV 20. In the mid-1950s, WV 20 was rerouted at Hinton to cross the New River well south of town (new routing), then followed WV 3 into Hinton. The old route along the west side of the New River became WV 20 ALT. Between 1956-60, WV 20 was removed from CR 20/15 Guard Dr west of Princeton Between 1950-57, WV 20 was removed from CR 20/12 southeast of Pine Grove About 1957, WV 20 was restored to its original Hinton routing replacing WV 20 ALT. The old route became part of WV 3 and WV 3 ALT. The WV 3 ALT portion is now WV 107 (except WV 107 has been rerouted off of 1st St over the railroad bridge. It is unclear when the one way pair using Pleasant St and Main St was put into place).
Between 1950-63, WV 20 was removed from CR 44 Lerona. About 1960, WV 20 north was truncated to WV 7 east of New Martinsville, leaving behind WV 7. In 1960 (bridge date), WV 20 was removed from CR 4/15 Hoovertown Rd and CR 20/29 Mulberry Ridge Rd in French Creek. Between 1950-66, WV 20 was removed from CR 20/22 in Camden on Gauley Between 1963-72, WV 20 north was re-extended over WV 7 out to a rerouted WV 7 which was improved in this area. About 1967, WV 20 was rebuilt in the Bluewell area onto new alignment, leaving behind CR 20/8 Spurrier Rd/Houston Rd In 1977, WV 20 got its weirder split alignment in Clarksburg. The NB routing used Marshall to Pike west. Oak St is no longer the last street between the two-way segments of Pike and Main (it is now Monticello Ave further west). Oak St is now WV 20 CONN.
Between 1973-79, WV 20 was removed from Dan Hale Reservoir Rd west of Princeton. Between 1978-80, WV 20 south was truncated to its current US 52 endpoint leaving behind US 52 and CR 120. Improvements: Upon designation, WV 20 was paved from Webster Springs to Water Sta; Cleveland to Wallace; Porters Falls to New Martinsville In 1932, WV 20 was paved from Water Sta to Cleveland The 1941 extension south to Princeton was paved from at least Webster Springs to Rainelle; Lerona to Princeton Between 1941-46, WV 20 was paved from Porters Falls to Wallace; Lerona to Pipestem; Hinton to Rainelle; extension to Virginia Between 1950-56, WV 20 was paved from Pipestem to Hinton WV 20 despite its length has no real multilane segments. Comment: WV 20 is the longest current state route in West Virginia. WV 20 is blown off by I-77. It is also technically blown off by I-64 but there are two extis available that are all but direct connections. | Previous WV 20's:
1930 ROUTE LOG WV 24: 0 - 0 WV 3 WB: 29 - 29 WV 3 EB: 1 - 30 US 60: 35 - 65 |
WV 20 #1: Appeared 1922 as new primary routing running from WV 24 (now WV 104) Princeton north through Hinton to end at WV 3 (now US 60) Rainelle.
Between 1929-31, WV 20 was renumbered as WV 44. Today it is again WV 20 except the original WV 20 routing used: in Athens, Vermillion to Burch to abandoned routing north; CR 44 through Lerona; CR 18 between Pipestem and True in Summers County; CR 31 and CR 44/6 in Meadows Bridge
