Creation: WV 65 was designated in 1933 as new routing, running from US 52 Naugatuck to US 52-119 Delbarton. This is the 2nd WV 65.
| Adjustments: Between 1950-56, WV 65 south was rerouted at Belo to instead continue east replacing Mingo CR 7 and Logan CR 9 to end at US 119 (now WV 44) Mt. Gay. The old route from Belo to Delbarton became WV 65S. Between 1977-80, WV 65 was rerouted again at Belo to replace WV 65S back to US 52 Delbarton. The route to Mt. Gay became US 119 (Holden to Mt Gay is now CR 18).
In 1997 or 1998, WV 65 south was extended with US 52 then replaced CR 9 to end at WV 49 Matewan. About 2011, WV 65 was rebuilt onto new alignment north of Red Jacket to tie into the rerouted US 52 King Coal Highway, leaving behind a substantial old WV 65 alignment that may be CR 65/85. It is unclear if any of this old alignment is still publicly accessible.
Improvements: By 1946, WV 65 was paved from Naugatuck to Belo; Bias to Delbarton By 1956, everything else was paved. In 1975 or 1976, WV 65 was multilaned from Belo to about Holden before this became US 119. There are currently no multilane segments besides its brief US 119 overlay. Comment: Serves as a de facto bypass of Williamson, and trucks on 52 south to Delbarton or Matewan are directed by signage to use WV 65 instead of US 52. | Previous WV 65's:

WV 65 #1: Appeared 1922 as new primary routing running from WV 2 (now WV 94) Racine southeast to WV 12 (now WV 3 ALT) Beckley.
About 1931, WV 65 was renumbered as part of WV 3.
