Creation: WV 72 was designated in 1923 (WVDOT Annual Report) as new primary routing. It ran from Hendricks south of WV 58 (now US 219) north via Parsons to WV 1 (now US 50) Macomber. This is the only WV 72.

WV 72 was finally fully paved when restored in Preston County.
WV 72 has no multilane segments.
Comment: WV 72 from WV 32 to Hendricks is unstriped and may not be fully two lanes wide. It is posted as not suitable for trucks. This along with WV 46 is one of the worst remaining roads in the primary system and should probably be truncated back to Hendricks or Parsons.
