WV 73 #1: Appeared 1925 as new primary routing running from WV 6 (now US 250) Fairmont to WV 4-7 (now US 19-119/WV 7) Morgantown.
Between 1934-37, WV 73 was removed from Cleveland Ave east of Fairmont St and instead began using Cleveland Ave west of Fairmont to Jackson to Jefferson to cross the river. Also between 1934-37, WV 73 was removed from CR 73/7 southwest of Morgantown (today this is a bit of Jamestown Dr, a little Andrew Dr and abandoned routing north to current CR 73/7 Round Bottom Dr back to CR 73. About 1936, WV 73 was extended east through Morgantown with US 119 then replaced Monogalia CRs 69 and 69/7 and Preston CR 1 to end at WV 26 Bruceton Mills. Also about 1936, WV 73 was extended south with US 250 from Fairmont, then replaced Marion CR 29; Taylor CRs 1/1 and 1; Harrison CR 15 to US 50 Bridgeport. The 1936 Official shows WV 73 following US 50 in the Clarksburg inset to end at WV 20. It is unknown how long this was like that - Harrison County maps don't show it.
In 1938, WVDOH studied requesting replacing WV 73 from Fairmont to Morgantown with an unspecified US route number. It is unclear if they formally requested this or not but it obviously did not happen. Between 1938-49, WV 73 was removed from Morgantown Ave between Park Ave east to Meadowdale Rd Between 1947-49, WV 73 was rerouted in central Fairmont to use Fairmont-Adams-Jefferson. It appears that in the early 1950s, WV 73 was given one-way alignments in downtown Morgantown: EB used the original alignment of Pleasant-Spruce-Willey, while WB used Willey-High-Walnut-University. Between 1950-55, WV 73 was removed from CR 73/21 (now CR 27/6) Hoglick Branch Rd at Eldora; CR 250/60 Three Ways Rd below Fairmont; moved onto East Park Ave in eastern Fairmont. The original routing was Diamond-Market-Haymon-Morgantown. In 1956, WV 73 was removed from CR 73/14 Smithtown School Rd in Smithtown About 1957, WV 73 was removed from the lengthy CR 73/6 Mt Harmony Rd and CR 73/9 Page Dr. northeast of Fairmont. Between 1950-60, WV 73 was placed on one-way alignments in downtown Fairmont. NB used the current Fairmont-Adams-Jefferson alignment while SB used the previous Fairmont-Cleveland-Jackson-Jefferson alignment.
In the early 1970s, WV 73 was rerouted onto straighter alignments in 3 places where it crossed I-79. In 1977, WV 73 was completely decommissioned with the parts not remaining from primary overlays becoming: CR 73/73 (some of this is now WV 131) from Bridgeport to US 250; WV 310 (Jefferson is now CR 19/73) within Fairmont; CR 73 from WV 310 to US 119; it is unclear if WV 73 was moved onto CR 857 from US 119 across then-US 48 (now I-68) before it was decommissioned or if it always used CR 73/12 Old Cheat Rd; it is also unlear if CR 857 was a direct renumbering of WV 73 across Cheat Lake; CR 69/19 and CR 19/6 along Cranberry Square and now-private Coopers Rock Incline; 1.1 miles of US 48 (now I-68); CR 73/73 from CR 69/5 to WV 26. WV 73's decommssioning makes a lot of sense as it closely paralleled I-79 and today's I-68 very closely.
