Creation: Appeared in 1930 (WVDOH Annual Report) as new primary routing, running from WV 56 (now US 250) Belington north through Independence to curl northwest to end at WV 56 (now US 119). This is the only WV 92.
| Adjustments: In 1933, WV 92 north was rerouted at Newberg to instead continue north to end at WV 7 Reedsville. The old route became CR 33 and CR 85. Between 1934-37, WV 92 was rerouted between US 50 and Newberg, replacing then-CR 62 and some new construction. The old route became CR 62 Miller Hill Rd. In 1938 or 1939, WV 92 was given a bypass of Nestorville and Kasson, leaving behind CR 5 (now WV 38) and CR 93 Kasson Rd.
Between 1938-41, WV 92 was removed from CR 92/25 Dunham Cut near Belington; CR 92/27 Coyote Run Rd; a number of abandoned alignments up to Meadowville. About 1942, WV 92 was rerouted south of US 50 to its current routing replacing the original CR 92/14, leaving behind a new CR 92/14, CR 92/13 and some US 50. In this rerouting, WV 92 came from the other direction and a wye intersection was constructed where it left heading for Reedsville. This wye was bigger than traditional WV wye set-ups and the former path of WV 92 leaving US 50 became WV 92-Y (now physically destroyed).
Also between 1938-46, WV 92 south was extended across US 250 replacing CR 11 to the west CL of Belington. Between 1947-61, WV 92 south's end was moved back to US 250 in Belington leaving behind CR 11 once again.
In the early 1950s, WV 92 was extended northwest with WV 7 to Morgantown, then on new routing along Monongahelia Blvd north then west across the river, then following more existing WV 7 to Pursglove, then as a mix of new construction and upgrading CR 50 to meet US 19 (now WV 100) just below the Pennsylvania line.
Between 1957-60, WV 92 north was truncated to downtown Morganton and was replaced by a rerouted US 19. About 1970, WV 92 was extended south with US 250 through Elkins to Bartow, then south with WV 28 to Minnehaha Springs, then east a short distance with WV 39, then south replacing CR 25 and CR 15 to end at US 60 White Sulphur Springs.
Between 1984-86, WV 92 north was truncated back to its current endpoint in Reedsville, leaving behind WV 7.
About 1994, WV 92 was removed from CR 250/15, CR 151/3, CR 151, and CR 151/4 west of Elkins and placed on the newly constructed Corridor H expressway. Improvements: Upon designation, WV 92 was paved only from Nestorville halfway to Kesson and on the US 50 overlap. In 1933, WV 92 was paved from Belington to Nestorville; short stretch north of Newberg; Arthurdale to Reedsville. In 1938 or 1939, WV 92 was paved on the new Nestorville-Kasson bypass. About 1940, WV 92 was paved from US 50 to Newberg In 1941, WV 92 was paved from Newberg to Arthurdale and from Kasson to the Preston County line In 1942, WV 92 was paved from US 50 south to the Barbour County line, making WV 92 fully paved. WV 92 was placed on a multilane alignment when added to a part of Corridor H in 1994. Comment: WV 92 has long overlays to get between Belington and where it leaves WV 39 to head for White Sulphur Springs. Not sure why it was necessary to have one route number do this instead of just having WV 28 extended south. |
