Creation: WV 161 appeared in 1976 as an upgrade to CR 13 plus another route I cannot discern, running from WV 16 Bishop to WV 102 (now WV 103) near Black Wolf. This is the only WV 161.
Adjustments: Between 1978-80, WV 161 was extended northeast replacing WV 102 a couple miles, then replaced CR 15 to end at US 52 Elkhorn.

Improvements: Upon designation, WV 161 was fully paved; no multilane segments.
Comment: WV 161 actually enters Virginia for a short bit in Bishop. I believe West Virginia maintains this segment, as WV 161 nor a residential street show up on the Tazewell County VA map.
