Comments: Much more detailed history of the planning and execution of I-540 can be found at Brian LeBlanc's Wake COunty Roads website.
The I-540 renumbering to NC 540 came very late relative to the opening of the first section of NC 540 - interstate signs had been installed and had to be changed.

If I-540 is ever extended southeast back around to I-40 in the Garner area, will it be renumbered as I-640? This was the plan from 1996-2002 when NCDOT changed its position on this question. For now 540 is here to stay.
