I-640 was assigned by NCDOT in 1996 to the outer beltway of Raleigh once it connected to I-40 on both ends. Until that point the beltway would be signed as I-540.
In 2002, NCDOT reversed its position on this issue and the beltway will stay I-540 even if it does connect to I-40 on both ends someday. |
