The road:
NC 226-A: Born in 1961 as a renumbering of NC 26-A, running as it does now.
When I first drove NC 226-A in the late 1980s, there was still a cutout SB leaving NC 226.
NC 226-A's value as a state highway is questionable...it doesn't go anywhere and is 7 miles longer than the current NC 226 ascension to the Blue Ridge.

NC 226-A #2: Appeared between 1996-99 as effectively a bypass of Bakersville. The eastern half was an upgrade to SR 1191 and the western half was a renumbering of part of NC 80.
This probably should be NC 226 with the route through Bakersville as NC 226 Business...
