The oldest active US 64 Business was born in 1960 as a replacement for US 64-A and is the 4th US 64 Business. It originally ran straight through town on Main St.
In Sept 1993 (NCDOT), the Main St bridge over the Scuppernong River was taken down and US 64 Business was rerouted to use Broad St (had been NC 94) south to its current end at US 64/NC 94.

Between 1969-72, US 64 Bus was split into one-way alignments. EB used Meeting St while WB used Union St.
In August 1992 (NCDOT), US 64 Business was rerouted in Morganton to follow NC 18 north out of town out to the rerouted US 64 as it runs today. So EB left Meeting onto Green, then north on Avery. WB used Avery to Sterling south to Union.

In August 1975 (NCDOT), US 64 Business was extended in both directions: west replacing US 64 to the new US 64 freeway near Eagle Rock; east replacing US 64 to Zebulon, then duplexing north with NC 96 to the new US 64 freeway there.
In Nov 2006 (NCDOT), US 64 Business was extended west replacing US 64-264 over to I-440. Heading westbound there is no posted indication to take I-440 over to US 64. On US 64 EB, the BGS assembly at the US 64-264 exit has a BGS for the upcoming US 64 Business interchange.

The 17th US 64 Business was created in December 2020 when US 64 was placed on its freeway bypass of Asheboro. Most of this is duplexed with NC 49 which did not get placed on the new bypass.
Now a chronological look at 6 decommissioned US 64 Business routes:
The 1st US 64 Business was created in 1960 as a renumbering of US 64-A in Brevard, running along Caldwell St.
US 64 Business lasted to at least 1980 but I don't recall any US 64 Business postings when I frequented Brevard in the late 1980s.
Today Caldwell St is again US 64 Business.

About 1963, US 64 Business went back to being US 64 except Front St west of Newton St became NC 90 (now also part of US 64 again).
