Creation: First appears as dotted lines on the 1963 official. I-581 opened in Nov 1964 (per Scott Kozel's website) from I-81 to VA 117.
| Adjustments: In two segments (first to SR 625 - now VA 101), I-581 was extended and opened to US 11 ALT-460/VA 116 Orange Ave by Sept 1965. In two segments (first to US 11-220/VA 116 Williamson Ave), I-581 was extended to VA 24 by Oct 1967. Note that south of Orange Ave I-581 was built nearly on top of 2nd Ave.
Improvements: Upon designation, I-581 was a 6-laned interstate, as it remains today. Posted: Fully posted; its southern endpoint is clearly marked. Multiplexes: US 220 (entire lenght) Legislative names: None Other names: None Scenic Byway: No segments Comments:I-581 continues to use the historic Virginia practice of using E-W or N-S as exit suffixes instead of A-B. This is the last Virginia interstate to use these directional suffixes. |
