US 340 ALT: First requested by Virginia in April 1952 as part of rerouting US 340 south to US 11 near Greenville. In July 1952, AASHO approved rerouting US 340 and denied the US 340 ALT request. I can't find any documentation showing US 340 ALT being eventually approved but it first appears on the
1954 Official as a renumbering of US 340 from Berryville to Winchester and as an addition to US 522 from Winchester south to US 340/VA 277 at Double Tollgate.
In Oct 1962 (CTB), citing motorist confusion, US 340 ALT was dropped. Berryville to Winchester remained VA 7 and Winchester to Double Tollgate remained US 522 (used SR 760 in the Armel area).
