VA 21: Began in January 1918 as an original state route defined by the general assembly: Route 21: Warrenton, Manassas, Fairfax, Washington DC
VA 21 original route: Warrenton to Washington via Manassas and Alexandria 1922 Auto Trails In Dec 1921 (CTB), VA 21 was rerouted at Centreville to go via Gainesville to New Baltimore, avoiding Manassas. The old route via Manassas became VA 25. Today this is VA 215, SR 779, VA 28, SR 616 north of Manassas Park and the Old Centreville Rd alignments Also in Dec 1921 (CTB), VA 21 was rerouted at Fairfax to go via Falls Church along Lee Highway to the final rendition of the Aqueduct Bridge (just west of the Key Bridge). Fairfax to Alexandria remained part of VA 6 (now VA 236) and Alexandria to Washington DC remained part of VA 1 (now mostly US 1). Also in Dec 1921 (CTB), VA 21 was extended west over Lee Highway as new primary routing to VA 7 (SR 675 Old Massies Corner Rd) Massies Corner, then with VA 7 to end at Washington, VA. Around April 1922 (CTB shows both VA 16 and VA 21 having separate references as running New Market to Luray), VA 21 was extended west with VA 7 to Sperryville, then replaced VA 16 west through Luray to end at VA 3 (now US 11) New Market.
VA 21 bypasses Manassas and extends to New Market 1924 Official In Jan 1923 (Wikipedia referencing Washington Post), VA 21 was moved from the Aqueduct Bridge to today's Key Bridge over the Potomac River. In late 1926, US 211 was added to VA 21 from New Market to Fairfax and US 50 from Fairfax to Washington DC.
US 211 and US 50 added to VA 21 1926 Official About 1928, US 211 was added to VA 21 from Fairfax to Washington DC, as US 50 was moved elsewhere. About 1930, VA 21 was placed on a new bypass of Sperryville, leaving behind what I believe was VA 37Y (now SR 1001) and CR 111 (now SRs 1002/1003). Also about 1930, VA 21 was removed from today's SR 613/691 Waterloo and Old Waterloo Rd in Culpeper and Fauquier Counties In July 1933, VA 21 was dropped from the system, with US 211 remaining from New Market to Washington DC. The last alignment of VA 21 ran thusly: SR 1002 Old Cross Rd; abandoned routing plus SR 674 up Massanutten Mtn; US 211 east; SR 766 through Hamburg; US 211 Business through Luray; US 211 to Sperryville, then US 211 Business through Washington VA; US 211 to Warrenton except: SR 683 Old Mill Rd; SR 675 Old Massies Corner Rd plus abandoned segment; SR 679 Googe Mtn Rd; SR 678 Jordans Rd; US 211 Business through Warrenton except used Alexandria Pike; US 29 to Washington DC except: SR 674/693 loop New Baltimore; VA 309 loop of Lee Hwy. |
