Creation:  VA 271 was created in September 1940 as part of the state line renumbering, replacing VA 160. It ran just as it does now. This is the 2nd VA 271.
Adjustments:  Between 1985-94, VA 271 was rerouted to the newly built Nuckols Rd, leaving behind about 700 feet of old alignment west of the intersection
Improvements:  Paved upon inception
Between 1985-94, VA 271 was multilaned from Nuckolls Rd to Country Creek Way
Between 1995-2002, VA 271 was multilaned from US 250 to just short of its I-64 overpass
In 2008, VA 271 was multilaned across I-64 to Liesfeld Farm Rd.

Comment:  VA 271 north of SR 623 is still pretty rural with a narrower alignment.
The 1939 VDOT report on primary system development had recommended that VA 271 (then VA 160) be decommissioned in its entirety.
