VA 301 ALT: May have existed beginning in Jan 1945 (CTB) as a renumbering of VA 299 along Crater Rd, then US 460 and VA 36 to end at US 1-301 at the Appomattox River bridge. At some point it became US 301 ALT. Today it is mainline US 301.
